Every May, the people of Sabah prepare to celebrate Kaamatan – the Harvest Festival that brings together tradition, gratitude, and vibrant cultural expression. As a teacher and a mom, I’m always on the lookout for fun and meaningful ways to introduce this important celebration to young children.
And one of the simplest, most effective ways?
Coloring activities! 🎨🖍️
Why Coloring?
Coloring is more than just playtime. For young kids, it’s a way to develop fine motor skills, explore creativity, and in this case – learn about their heritage in a way that’s easy to relate to.
I’ve created a few Kaamatan-themed coloring sheets especially for preschoolers and lower primary kids (ages 5–7). These include:
-
A young Kadazan-Dusun child in traditional attire
-
Traditional instruments like the gong, sompoton, and bamboo flute (seluring)
-
Cultural symbols like paddy fields, Mount Kinabalu, and the tangkob (a traditional rice storage basket)
-
Special characters like the Unduk Ngadau (Kaamatan beauty queen) and Boavanzoi Tavantang, representing the strength and grace of indigenous women
All illustrations are black-and-white line drawings – perfect for young children to color freely.
Who Can Use This?
✅ Preschool and early primary school teachers
✅ Parents looking for weekend bonding activities
✅ Schools celebrating Kaamatan
✅ Homeschoolers or community centers
🖨️ Download & Start Coloring!
These sheets are free to print and use. While your child colors, take the opportunity to tell them stories about Kaamatan – why we celebrate it, and what it means to the people of Sabah.
📸 And if your kids want to show off their masterpieces, feel free to share them online with these hashtags:
